Description:

(1822 – 1903) Union brigadier general and a grandson of Alexander Hamilton, led the 2nd Division in the Army of the Mississippi. He was transferred to command the 3rd Division throughout much of the Siege of Corinth. Toward the close of that campaign, Hamilton was elevated to command the right wing of the Army of the Mississippi, consisting of the 3rd and 4th Divisions. Resigned due to poor health. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., New York, April 17, 1891, to fellow Union general James G. Wilson (1832-1914). In part: '...I will call tomorrow at your place of business to make a few inquiries. I have very much already prepared as to a sketch of...Genl. Scott...[I] will show you...my mode of treatment of important events in his life...' Expertly inlaid to a larger sheet, lightly toned, else fine. 'Genl. Scott' refers to famed War of 1812 and Mexican War general Winfield Scott (1786-1866), whom Hamilton served as an aide in the latter conflict.
