Description:

SCHUTZPOLIZEI CORPORAL HELPS SUPPRESS THE BIALYSTOK GHETTO UPRISING
Sobering typed D.S., 2pp. oblong 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 11, 1944, a list of anti-partisan and "anti-bandit" actions in which Schutzpolizei "Rottwachtmeister" ("corporal") Freidrich Kreyssig participated, resulting in him receiving the "Bandenkampfabzeichen" ("Anti-Partisan Guerilla Warfare Badge") in bronze. These include actions against "bandits" in the Ukraine, the Carpathian Mountains, and Poland. By far the most notable of the actions listed occur in the five day span between August 16 and 20, 1943 which all bear the notation: "Fought with bandits and Jews during the evacuation of the ghetto in Bialystok." This refers to the Bialystok Ghetto uprising, the second-largest ghetto uprising to be attempted by Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland, after the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in April-May of 1943. The uprising was triggered by the German announcement of mass deportations from the ghetto to extermination camps as part of Aktion Reinhard, upon which several hundred Jews resisted the troops carrying out the deportations with rifles, pistols, Molotov cocktails and a captured machine gun. The description of Kreyssig's actions on the first day of the uprising also includes the note "...assault troop behind the armored car in the ghetto...", a reference to the immediate deployment of a tank against the fighters by SS Gruppenfuhrer Odilo Globocnik. The document is signed at the conclusion by a Schutzpolizei lieutenant, as well as two functionaries, "Immer" and "Fuchs". Shows folds, with a 1" split thereto, and file holes at the left margin, else very good. The deportations proceeded as planned on August 17, and over 10,000 Jews were transported to Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz. It is estimated that of Bialystok's prewar population of almost 60,000 Jews, only several hundred survived the Holocaust.
