Description:

Sword bayonet, 23 3/4" blade, 28 1/2" overall, manufactured by the German firm of Schnitzler & Kirshbaum for export to Brazil, although many ended up in the United States and were used by both sides during the Civil War. The grip is of cast brass with a steel spring catch and is marked "40" on the pommel. It shows a fine patina, with some sallow dings. The straight, single-edged blade shows scattered spots of oxidation, with faint run marks and slight rounding to the tip. Both sides bear a deep fuller, running to within 6 ½" of the tip. The reverse ricasso is marked "S&K, the initials of the manufacturer, with a small, anchor-shaped proof mark on the ricasso, with the same proofmark appearing just below on the crossguard. The bayonet is housed in a black leather scabbard with nickel silver-plated throat and drag. The drag is well oxidized, and the frog stud on the throat is marked with a British War Department "broad arrow" property stamp, indicating that this scabbard is most likely not original to the weapon. The leather is well-worn and is splitting slightly above the drag. A modern production black leather frog is fitted to the scabbard.
