Description:

"SCENES OF SHIGA, NARA AND KYOTO" JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS BY UCHIDA
Complete set of six Japanese woodblock prints, each 8 1/2" x 11" and mounted in a 9 3/4" x 13 3/4" mat, by KOTOZUKA EIICHI (1906-1979), and printed by the Uchida company of Kyoto, circa 1950. Each finely executed and colored print depicts a scene from the cities of Shiga, Nara or Kyoto in the Kansau region of southern Japan. These scenes include cherry blossoms at Nara, the monumental Buddha statue at Todaiji Temple, and the Katata Temple at Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. The set is contained in a paperboard folder, with the title printed in kanji, accompanied by an English translation, on the front cover. Each print bears the artist's printed signature, as well as a number on the verso which corresponds to a key located inside the back cover of the folder, giving the title of each scene. The verso of each print also bears a black ink "SAMPLE" stamp. These prints were salesman's samples acquired by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Thomas Hood, who sold these prints in the eastern United States on behalf of Uchida. These are excellent examples of "Sosaku hanga" prints, which were produced based on a Western model of printmaking, in which the artists retained creative control over their works, and which utilized a unique synthesis of Japanese and Western aesthetic techniques. Very good to fine.
