Description:

SAVAGE NAVY MODEL 1861 PERCUSSION REVOLVER
Savage Navy Model 1861 six-shot .36 caliber percussion revolver, made from 1861 until 1862 with a total production of 20,000 guns. This pistol was cocked when the shooter used his middle finger to draw back the 'figure 8' lever and then released it forward to cock the hammer and rotate the cylinder. The barrel's serial number on this example is obliterated as a vandal shamefully used a very abrasive means of scouring corrosion from the barrel, loading lever and its pivot housing. Mechanically, the pistol is sound and cursory examination shows little pitting. Nipples are completely intact. The barrel stamping is generally clear, a few letters a bit corroded: 'SAVAGE R.F.A CO MIDDLETOWN. CT /H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856 / JANUARY 19 1859 MAY 15 1860' Surface corrosion is prevalent throughout, in no way severe. The wood grips have been abused, the right side bearing a small chip, the left side carved 'P. SHERIDAN' many years ago, as a prank or with intent to deceive. A decent example of a rare pistol, in want of some attention and restoration. Estimated accordingly.
