Description:

42.SARATOGA JOSEPH FAY Fine content war date A.D.S., 1p. legal 4to., Bennington, [Vt.], Oct. 29, 1777 a receipt for ammunition most likely secured from the recently surrendered army under John Burgoyne, "This day received from Jonathan Capron the following Articles as public Ordinance Stores". Fay notes the receipt of 500 "Small arm Cartridges", over 900 "Loose Ball", 110 "Case Shott" 12 "Musquets" and other articles in such plentiful supply that they could only come from one place: John Burgoyne's surrendered army that had laid down their arms on October 17. Other articles included 6 "Broad Swords", 42 cartridge boxes, cartridge paper, a worm for cleaning guns, and a box of "loose powder". Jonathan Capron served as a quartermaster with the Green Mountain Boys under Ethan Allen and Seth Warner in 1775 and 1776, according to extant muster roles. It is likely that he continued in this capacity, under Seth Warner who was present at Hubbarton and whose late arrival at Bennington helped turn the tide in the Americans' favor. Following Bennington, Warner's men, in conjunction with other Vermont militia companies, worked to harass Burgoyne's supply lines, yielding critical military stores. Partial separations to expected folds, else fine. Together with JOSEPH FAY, a war-date A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Bennington, Sept. 21, 1779 ordering Asabel[?] Pomroy "to Deliver the two H[ogs]h[ead]s Salt belonging to me in your Store to the Bearer...". Partial fold separations with minor loss, light toning, else very good. $400-600 ###Ethan Allen banishes a Vermont Loyalist###
