SAMUEL WRAGG FERGUSON
(1834 - 1917) Confederate brigadier general who served with Beauregard until Shiloh, then under Wheeler in the Carolinas. When suggested for promotion, Wheeler vociferously condemned Ferguson. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Oakley, SC, May 2, 1905, to a W. M. Shaw, responding to his correspondent's request for an autograph and information, in part: ‘...I left Mississippi eleven years ago, and have not kept up with the Record of the Confederate Generals there. The only one I can think of now, is ex-governor [Robert] Lowry who lived at Jackson Mississippi. I have no doubt that there are others, but I cannot recall them. The editor of the Vicksburg Herald of Vicksburg Miss. Can probably give you the information you seek…' He signs ‘S. W. Ferguson' at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with splits thereto mended on the verso with archival tape, else very good.
