SAMUEL WRAGG CRAWFORD
(1829-1892) Union brigadier general who commanded a battery at Fort Sumter, and later led at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Five Forks. Three pre-war A.Ls.S. to his parents and wife, with full transcriptions included. The first signed 'Wylie', 4pp. 4to., Thornhedge, Oct. 1, 1850, is written in two separate sections to his father and then his mother, in part: ‘…Dr. Mower…says I should be ready to go, as we have not heard for sometime [sic] from the Western & Southern posts, & I may be sent off very soon…', then describes a visit to New York. The second, 3pp. 4to., El Paso, Jan. 18, 1856, is written to his mother, in part: ‘…A portion of our command left here for Sierra Blanca on White mountains & I accompanied them as far as [Fort] Fillmore. Gen [John] Garland has been with us lately & we have been busied with doing him appropriate honors…The new Army orders have caused much excitement, & some changes among us. Col. [Edmund Brooke] Alexander has left us, he was appointed Col. of one of the new regiments & left us two weeks ago for the states…I never had a kinder friend than Mrs. A[lexander] & I feel lost without her….you can imagine how much I desire to get home…'. The third, 4pp. 8vo., Madrid [NY], Oct. 8, 1860, is to Crawford's wife, contains personal news, especially regarding Church. Three pieces.
