SAMUEL V. FULKERSON
(1822-1862) Confederate colonel, a favorite of Stonewall Jackson who commanded the 3rd Brigade in Jackson's Division of the Army of Northern Virginia, killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill before he could be recommended for promotion to Brigadier General. Rare A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘Scott C[ourt] H[ouse] [Gate City, VA], June 3, 1852, to his sister Kate, in part: ‘They have made you up a school here if you will come and teach. Twenty scholars have already been subscribed, and they say you will have twenty-five… You would not find pleasant company and good society here, but you could stand it four or five months if you want to teach. If you will come, and have not bought a saddle yet, don't buy, as there is a saddler here that will send more by paying in that way… I have been appointed by the Gov[erno]r a Visitor to the [Virginia] Military Institute at Lexington…' He signs ‘S. V. Fulkerson' at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with cello tape repairs affecting the address at top right, additional cello tape repairs on the verso showing through the paper, and an approx. 1 in. sq. loss of paper at the top edge where unsealed, otherwise in very good condition.
