(1834 - 1906) American aviation pioneer who explored the possibility of flight by heavier-than-air machines and actually succeeded in inventing such a machine which flew over the Potomac for 3,000 feet. Fine content A.L.S. 1p. 8vo. on Smithsonian letterhead, Newport, R.I., Aug. 15, 1901 to Mrs. Michaels thanking her for her "...comforting letter about my mother. I feel so much alone in the world, that I turn more eagerly to those few; of whose affection I feel sure, and yours and your daughter's are of them... I am glad to think that you and Marion saw her peaceful in death, if I could not..." A few minor toned spots, usual folds, else very good condition.
