SAMUEL P. LANGLEY
(1834 - 1906) American aviation pioneer who explored the possibility of flight by heavier-than-air machines and actually succeeded in inventing such a machine which flew over the Potomac for 3,000 feet. T.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, May 11, 1899, on Smithsonian Institute letterhead to Francis Woodbridge, care of the wife of Otho Michaelis, a major in U.S. Signal Army who accompanied Langley on his 1891 expedition to Mt. Whitney. In part: "...On the receipt of your telegram I write...to say that quarters, either those mentioned or possible others, will be provided for you on the 'Canada'...The convenient thing for travel is a low trunk; what is technically called a 'steamer trunk', which will go under your berth...All travelling expenses will be provided for but inclose you Fifty dollars [not included!] which you may find convenient...". Very good.
