SAMUEL P. HEINTZELMAN
(1805 – 1880) Union major general who served at the First and Second battles of Bull Run, and in other engagements during the Peninsula Campaign. Relieved from command in 1862 for being too old and insufficiently aggressive. War-date autograph D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., [place uncl.], Dec. 26, 1861, granting permission for a captain of the 38th New York to ‘...remove some [window] sashs [sic] from a Green House… if there is nothing in the Green house that will suffer by so doing… This property to be used in a building now being erected in the Brigade to which the regiment belongs. This property to be well taken care of.' He signs ‘S. P. Heintzelman' at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl cmg'. Trimmed at the edges, shows folds, some ink spots, and a few small interior splits and tears, otherwise in very good condition.
