Description:

SAMUEL MATHER'S 'AN APOLOGY FOR THE LIBERTIES OF THE CHURCHES IN NEW ENGLAND...'
Rare book: AN APOLOGY FOR THE LIBERTIES OF THE CHURCHES IN NEW ENGLAND: TO WHICH IS PREFIX'D, A DISCOURSE CONCERNING CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES. BY...PASTOR OF A CHURCH IN BOSTON, NEW ENGLAND by Samuel Mather (1706-1785), clergyman and the son of Cotton Mather (Boston: T. Fleet, for Daniel Henchman), 1738. First edition, 212pp. 8vo., in worn leather, front cover cracked at the spine edge, bottom of the spine chipped, covers generally worn, contents very good. Two ownership signatures, 1777 and 1789, number inked at the bottom of the first page. Mather argues for 'the Royal Favour and Protection in the undisturb'd Enjoyment of the Liberties of our Churches and Schools....', asks that the King refrain from impinging upon the rights of his citizens in the Colonies, and describes the unique aspects of American churches, especially their congregational nature. A most important tract, certainly worthy of restoration.
