Description:

(1731 - 1796) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, president of the Continental Congress, and Governor of Connecticut. Good content A.L.S. with his initials 'S. H.' as Governor, 1p. large 4to., Norwich, Sep. 4, 1793, a retained copy of his letter almost certainly sent to Secretary of War HENRY KNOX. In part: '...Respecting the Brig Nancy Capt. Barry the Master & Owner kis arrived here & taken her into his possession by my order. She will need some repairs...before she can be moved. You will please to inform me soon as may be whether it is Expected that the owner defrays the Expences of taking into Custody & Safe Keeping...or whether Government means to defray that expence themselves...' Lower-left corner excised, probably removing the recipient's name. Some marginal chips and toned spots, mounted to heavy stock, still overall very good. The Brig Nancy, commissioned Sep. 4, 1778, was a Connecticut privateer carrying four cannon and a crew of 16. The damages mentioned were very possibly combat-related.
