Description:

SAMUEL HOPKINS
(1721-1803) American theologian and reformer, the founder of the sect "Hopkinsians", remembered for his profound influence on New England theology. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Great Barringon, Mass., Oct. 30, 1771, to his colleague Rev. Mark Leavenworth in Waterbury, Mass. In part: "...I have, since I came from home, concluded to put one of my sons to learning and he being acquainted with Benoni Upson, I have determined to send him to Waterbury this winter, trusting that you will be willing to undertake to instruct him; for which I will satisfie you. As my books are at Newport he must borrow til spring, or buy what he cannot borrow, in which I ask your advice and assistance. As he is so advanced in age [I] should be glad he may be put forward...What his genius is, is yet to be proved. I trust he will be steady and diligent...".
