Description:

SAMUEL H. PARSONS
(1737 - 1789) Major General in the Continental Army who saw service during the siege of Boston and the Battle of Long Island. Succeeded Israel Putnam in command of the Connecticut line. Served on the jury that convicted John Andre. Good content A.L.S. "Saml H.Parsons", 1p.large 8vo., [nn.p., n.d.,ca. 1775], to a commissary concerning obtaining uniform items for his staff. In part: "...The three Hats ... are for me & my Family [aides and other officers at headquarters]. I exclude the officers of the 6th Regt. from a Division, except the field officers because their Caps make them decent in appearance & if they want, they must wait. Two of the field officers of the 5th Regt. have had their share to one; the Paymaster also has been supplied & therefore that Regt. ought to be excluded from a Draft for the three remaining on Hand, as the Regts. who draw them can have no more than the 5th have had..." Clearly supplies were short even this early on for a regimental commander to become involved in the disposition of three hats! With integral address leaf addressed: ''To - Mr. Commisy. G. Clark - Camp.'' A fine example of the rare general, especially so in a wartime document. Very good.
