Description:

SAMUEL FRANCIS DU PONT
(1803-1865) Prominent member of the Du Pont family, served in the Mexican War and was instrumental in early naval victories in the Chesapeake area during the Civil War. Rose to Rear Admiral and superintendent of the Naval Academy. Superb content, war-date A.L.S., "S.F. Du Pont", 1p., 8vo., [Washington], June 26, 1862, updating Capt. Charles Steedman as to naval efforts against the Confederacy: "...The Sabine is ordered home & goes to New York. Things look well here. My own impression is that the Rebel gentlemen are done in Virginia. Transportation is wanted only, & McClellan requires some 7 or 8 days more to get fully in position. Troops arrive daily, looking better than the first...". Du Pont's letter refers to his successful blockade against any possible Confederate naval advance, stretching from Norfolk to the eastern coast of Florida, for which Congress would award him his Rear Admiralty. Expected folds, else fine.
