Description:

(1814-1900) U.S. Congressman during the Reconstruction era, avid prohibitionist, only Republican to vote against the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Good content A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Cincinnati, April 27, 1866, to Judge Y. K. Stilwell regarding supposed statements he made about President Andrew Johnson. In part: '...The combat thickens. Hell seems to have stirred...the last card which seems to be playing is exemplified in the following...[from an affixed newspaper clipping] 'Indications are that General Cary will not be confirmed as Collector of the Second district of Ohio...advised that strong protests against the appointment are on the way...Delano and Hubbell today informed the president that a couple of months since...Cary made a temperance speech...denounced Mr. Johnson as a habitual drunkard...'[end clipping]...I wish you to see Delano and Hubbell and ask them if they have made such communication to the President...if they have not let a telegram be sent to the Cincinnati press branding it as false...I have not been to Delaware for a number of years, I have made no such statement...If I am appointed I expect to discharge its duties to the best of my ability...When I cannot hold an office under the President without being false to his interest I would instantly resign. I consider him maligned, abused, vilified and whether I am in or out of office.' Accompanied with an engraving of Cary. Fine condition.
