Description:

SAMUEL ADAMS
(1722 - 1803) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, an American revolutionary politician who organized opposition to the Stamp Act and was a leader in the agitation that led to Boston Tea Party. Fine content and association autograph endorsement signed as President of the Massachusetts Senate, placed in the center of a document signed by fellow revolutionaries TRISTRAM DALTON and SAMUEL OTIS. This document was generated by a committee appointed by the House and Senate of the Massachusetts, issued "In Senate" (Boston), Feb. 22, 1785. At top, Tristram Dalton writes: "The Committee of both Houses appointed to prepare Instruction to the Delegates of this Commonwealth in Congress have attended that Service - and take leave to report the Resolves accompanying." He signs at conclusion. Beneath, Adams endorses the report and signs: "Read & accepted with amendments from the [?] paper. S. Adams Pred't". Two days later, on Feb. 24, Speaker of the House Samuel Otis writes: "Received & concurred with a further amendment. Sent up for concurrence. Sam A. Otis Spkr". Text just the very slightest bit lightened, else fine condition. Double-matted with an engraving of Adams, set into a gilt wood framed and ready for display. TRISTRAM DALTON (17381817) was a prominent Massachusetts politician and merchant who served a single term as one of the first United States Senators, from 1789 to 1791. His contributions included provisioning of ships from his merchant fleet to the Penobscot Expedition of 1780, and served as a delegate to the state convention on the adoption of the Constitution. SAMUEL A. OTIS (17401814) was the first Secretary of the United States Senate, serving for its first 25 years. Supremely qualified for the job, Otis had been a former quartermaster of the Continental army, speaker of the Massachusetts house, member of Congress under the Articles of Confederation, and John Adams' long-term ally. He also held the bible at Washington's inauguration.
