In small part: “...Grim is here and tight most of the time disgracing himself & friends...Jimmy is inconsolable over his Uncle Elliott going into the army...Palmer is having a hard time getting his company up – Has now got 77...Chas. Serle 2nd Lieut – Chas. Wiles 1st Cunningham is trying to raise 30 men to go with him and raise a company...If you wish will send you the Hawkeye from day to day when you get into camp life...John Lofland is getting up a rifle company to buy our men rifles – I think we will get the Minie. About 40 of us in it – We will I presume expend our patriotism shooting at a mark...No word about your majorship...Have your daguerreotype taken...” Very good.
