Description:

TEMPLE HOUSTON (1860– 1905) American attorney and politician who served from 1885 to 1889 in the Texas State Senate. He was the last-born child of Margaret Lea Houston and Sam Houston, the first elected president of the Republic of Texas. Scarce, very lengthy, A.L.S. ‘Temple Houston', 8pp. 4to., Mobeetie, June 10, 1885, on letterhead of Land and Collecting Agent W. H. Grisby to F. Y. Brown in New York. In extreme small part: ‘…On my return here 29th ult. I received your favor of the 5th of May and since then have heard nothing in reference to the return of the patents for survey…of Block B2. I await your pleasure in the matter and once in possession after the patents are prepared to expand the block to its right dimensions…In pursuance of this idea I have done all I could in the matter of these patents and am assured that it will be done with all possible speed…I am not in receipt of any advices from the statutes of the Carhart matter – the statutes are very explicit in reference to illegal enclosure of land, the penalty being $2.00 per acre per annum on 50 cts per quarter…Referring to the injunction suit a variety of questions are involved when last a Graham Judge McCormick required me to give a restraining order bond…to the hearing for a temporary injunction and I had no authority to sign the name of the principal and was preparing to return to Falmouth [?] to arrange for Security (none being at Graham) when in compliance with my instructions I was telegraphed from Austin by the passage of the law postponing the payment of [?] until July 7th, whereupon I suspended most in the matter until the present…But on injunctions we are on the Equity docked and the amount being under $5,000 we can not [sic] appeal to the Supreme Court of the U.S.A. in the event of an advance judgment….'. Much more. Boldly penned and very good. This is longest A.L.S. of Temple Houston we have seen.
