Description:

(1889 - 1982) American evangelist, writer and granddaughter of William Booth, who founded the mission group in England that became the Salvation Army. She traveled widely as an evangelist in the United States and abroad, preaching in four languages. In 1946 she founded the World Association of Mothers for Peace. An important archive of materials from the estate of Eleanor Pursel who apparently collaborated closely with Demarest in her musical work. Included is: three original sets of music and lyrics for her song "The Virgin's Lullaby", two of which are partially inked-over, the third likely entirely in Demarest's hand; a signed 8 x 10 in. photo, ca. 1920; an A.D.S. with initials on how best to transcribe the song; lengthy typed instructions on Preparations for a Single Church Spiritual Rearmament Campaign; typed draft charter for the "World Association of Mothers For Peace Inc."; approx. 18pp. of copies of poems, letters to Demarest, and lists of personal effects returned to her surrounding the 1944 death of her son David, a Marine corpsman killed by shrapnel; 17 small candid photo of Demarest and her young children on vacation; about ten additional original photos from various stages of Demarest's life, and other ephemeral items. Overall very good.
