Chase was one of few individuals to have served in all three branches of the federal government. A.D.S. 'S.P. Chase' as Chief Justice, 1p. 8vo., Washington D.C., May 1, 1873, stating in full: 'It give me great pleasure to be able to concur fully with Professor Henry and Mr. Corcoran in their estimate of Mrs. Mary H. Schoolcraft and her benevolent undertaking. I have the pleasure of knowing Professor Schoolcraft, when a young man he was engaged with Gen. Cass in his exploring tour up to the upper lakes. I was a boy of twelve. His reputation was already great and has since become worldwide. His excellent widow has all his energy, benevolence of character...' Henry Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an American geologist and adventurer who accompanied Lewis Cass on his famed expedition to find the source of the Mississippi and published multiple works on Native Americans. Chase would die of a stroke just six days after writing this letter, on May 7, likely making it one of his last writings.
