Description:

SABER WITH CHASSEPOT BAYONET GRIP
An unusual, likely French sword, 32.75 in. blade, 37.5 in. overall, featuring a curved saber blade with a 1 in. wide fuller. The blade is blued from the ricasso to about 11.5 in. along its length, and engraved on both sides with decorations depicting stands of arms, flowers, and a gilt floral band at the ricasso. No maker's marks are present. The blade is fitted with a brass grip taken from a French M1866 Chassepot rifle bayonet, secured with a hammered iron rivet and with the quillon broken off, and the release button removed but retaining the spring. The blade shows dark mottled oxidation overall, with some wear to the bluing, while the iron components of the grip are fully oxidized. The sword is housed in a gold-painted steel scabbard with two suspension rings, which shows some chips to the paint throughout. Very good overall.
