Lot 448
TRANS-ATLANTIC FLOWN AND SIGNED POSTAL COVER An exceptionally rare "flown" airmail postal cover signed by CESARE SABELLI and GEORGE R. POND . The first cancellation is made at their point of departure, Floyd Bennett Field, May 14, 1934 at 7:16 AM. There next appears two round handstamp cancels from Irish airfield Leact Ui Concubair, May 15, 1934, the day they were forced down. The final cancel was made at their ultimate destination, Aeroporto Littorio, Rome, on June 11, 1934. The cover bears an eight cent airmail stamp, and both flyers signed the cover vertically at left. Sold with a second airmail cover, postmarked in Rome, Aug. 17, 1934 and in Newport, Pembrokeshire on Aug. 19, 1934, presumably part of the flight to display the plane in Europe. Boldly signed by Sabelli. Both covers are in very good condition. Souvenir signed flown covers signed by Sabelli have brought $400-500 in the past — this item is Sabelli's own and is canceled at the place and on the date he departed. $700-900
