MOUNTED AND LIKELY FLOWN AVIATOR'S COMPASS A probable flown relic from the Sabelli's transatlantic-crossing monoplane "Leonardo da Vinci", a black enamel painted liquid-floated compass with mounting bracket, a heavy-duty compass showing obvious signs of having been mounted, with an electrical connection supplying power to the light illuminating the dial from beneath. The compass is stored within a fitted wood box into which Sabelli placed a very old clear plastic protractor (broken) commonly used in navigation. The compass was manufactured by the French firm Vion, Model Q.S.C. 25, available at least as early as September, 1927 and intended solely for use by aviators. As Sabelli did not retain a single "souvenir" from the brief flight of the "Roma" in 1928, and did keep a section of the "Leonardo da Vinci" fabric, logbooks, etc., we believe we can safely assume that this compass was carried aboard the "Leonardo da Vinci" during her flight to Ireland and on to Rome. Light oxidation in a few places, else very good. $800-$1,200
