Lot 443
"LEONARDO DA VINCI" FLOWN FABRIC An important, one-of-a-kind relic from Sabelli and Pond's famous 1934 transatlantic flight, a 50" x 6" section of painted fabric removed from the airplane following the flight, bearing the name "LEONARDO DA VINCI" in gold block letters printed atop orange paint applied to the aircraft at the time of construction. No doubt this name panel was removed by Sabelli himself shortly after his arrival in Ireland or Rome, or more likely after the plane crashed Aug. 19, 1934. A few wrinkles and tiny paint chips, else very good and a superb item for display. Sold with an 8vo. menu, [Italy], June 17, 1934 signed by about a dozen of whom we presume to be Italian aviators and dignitaries, with a manuscript map on the verso showing Sabelli's route. Two pieces. $1,000-$1,500
