Description:

CONTRACTS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION, RECEIPT AND OWNERSHIP OF THE "LEONARDO DA VINCI" Historically important set of three signed documents surrounding the construction, delivery and ownership of Sabelli's famous transatlantic aircraft, the "Leonardo Da Vinci". They include first a 9pp. legal folio contract (signed carbon), New York, June 27, 1932 between Sabelli's North Oceanic Airways Corp. and Bellanca Aircraft Corporation. The contract cites the fact that Sabelli currently had a lawsuit pending against Bellanca for the failure of the "Roma" which was forced to abort flight four years earlier. In exchange for dropping the lawsuit (which possibly would have failed), Bellanca and his corporation agree to pay Sabelli $1.00, and most importantly, supply him with a new airplane which Sabelli would use two years later in his attempted transatlantic flight to Rome. Additionally, Bellanca essentially agrees to finance the $5,000 cost of the plane and provide Sabelli with a loan so that he might prepare for his next flight. The The last three pages of the contract, an addendum, set forth specifications for what would soon become the "Leonardo da Vinci". Boldly signed twice at conclusion by CESARE SABELLI , also signed by the plane's manufacturer GIUSEPPE BELLANCA . The second document, signed two months later, is Sabelli's signed receipt for the aircraft, 1p. 4to. carbon, New Castle, Aug. 30, 1932 in which Sabelli describes the plane "...used single engined Bellanca Monoplane, Type CH, Serial No. 3006, License No. NR-13137...flight tested and found to be in accordance with agreement of June 27th, 1942... ", and also mentioning that there appears to be a problem with "motor vibration " which, at Sabelli's option, Bellanca shall either repair of replace the airplane. Boldly signed twice by Sabellli, also signed by manufacturer Bellanca. The third document is a statement of ownership, 1p. legal folio, New York, Oct. 14, 1933, just a few months before Sabelli's famous flight. Sabelli, as President of his North Oceanic Airways, Inc. certifies that his monoplane: "...number NR-13137, which is about to be used by CAESAR SABELLI and GEORGE R. POND, for a transoceanic flight...Mr. Sabelli has nominated George R. Pond as his co-pilot... ", and states that the airplane belongs to Sabelli's company and that he is the sole officer permitted to act in the name of that company. Boldly signed by Sabelli at conclusion. All three documents are very good. Sold with related documents including drafts for a chattel mortgage on the airplane, an unsigned contracted appointing the flight's business manager, an unsigned release of Bellanca, and an unrelated D.S. 3pp. legal folio, Nov. 11, 1932 in which railroad builder Carlo Cavanna , a mechanic and co-pilot, agrees to join Sabelli in consideration of the payment of $1.00. Boldly signed by Sabelli and Cavanna at bottom. There are also three typed letters from financier UGO D'ANNUNZIO (son of the famed Italian poet), Dec. 3, 1933-Dec. 4, 1944 essentially advising Sabelli that he is nearing default and that he must undertake his flight as soon as possible. Finally, the lot includes 17 original photographs of the "Leonardo da Vinci" while being retrofitted for the flight. An impressive and important archive! $1,000-1,500
