Description:

SA-GRUPPE SACHSEN STANDARTENFUHRER'S SERVICE CAP
A very rare Sturmabteilung ‘coffee-can'-style cap or kepi with brown cotton drill crown, sides, and bill, with an emerald green wool top beneath the crown, indicative of SA-Gruppe Sachsen. Affixed to the front is a later-pattern SA eagle, above a smooth silver button and a two-piece brown faux leather strap with two adjustment buckles, secured across the visor with a brown-finished magnetic button on each side. The crown is fitted on each side with two green-painted air vent grommets. The crown and flaps are trimmed with braided, metallic silver piping, while the flaps are further bordered with a 1 cm. wide multi-part metallic silver ‘tresse', the appropriate wartime combination indicating the wearer's rank of Standartenfuhrer. The interior is lined with orange-brown oilcloth at the crown and taupe oilcloth at the sides, the crown stamped with the size ‘57'. The metal insignia in the front are attached through the lining with split pins. The light-brown leather sweatband covers a fabric RZM label, identifying the headgear as a ‘Dienstmutze' (service cap). The eagle insignia shows some dark patina and verdigris to the crevices, while the crown piping shows very slight fraying at the rear, and the interior of the vent grommets shows some slight oxidation. The interior fabric and the sweatband shows expected wear, and the cap overall shows signs of expedited wartime construction of a lower standard of quality than earlier examples, otherwise in very good condition overall.
