Description:

S.M.S. ILTIS BOXER REBELLION PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
Very rare photograph album, assembled by a crewman aboard the German gunboat SMS ILTIS and containing approx. 40 photographs, most 7 x 5 in., showing the battered vessel, her officers and crew aboard the ship, and scenes from Macau and Tsingtao. Must be inverted in order to view all of the images as the album is of the accordion type. There are multiple photographs of the crew, most in uniform and some taken aboard the vessel, pictures of the ship itself, her funnels pierce throughout from hostile fire, three photos of crewmen killed in action being buried at sea, views of Macau from the sea, gardens, temples, and other buildings on the island, scenes from Tsingtao showing the German cemetery there, street scenes, etc. The album bears painted, lacquered colors displaying two Asian women, possibly obtained in Japan. Some sets of photos have disbound, some images light, with the great majority remaining very good. ILTIS was launched on 4 August 1898 and commissioned into the German fleet on 1 December that year. She then joined the East Asia Squadron. Shortly thereafter, the Boxer Rebellion broke out. Kaiser Wilhelm II decided that an expeditionary force was necessary to reinforce the Eight Nation Alliance that had formed to defeat the Boxers. The expeditionary force consisted of the four Brandenburg-class battleships, six cruisers, ten freighters, three torpedo boats (including ILTIS), and six regiments of marines, under the command of Marshal Alfred von Waldersee. During World War II, ILTIS escorted SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU in the Channel Dash, and was later sunk by British torpedo boats with the loss of 115 men.
