Description:

S.A. 'ROHM' DAGGER WITH HANGER
Rarely encountered full inscription Ernst Rohm Honor Dagger with scabbard. Approx. 9 in. blade and 13.5 in. overall, a hardwood handle, solid nickel-silver cross guard, and a brown anodized scabbard. Firmly inset in the handle is an enameled SA button and German national eagle which fit perfectly. The blade bears the acid-etched 'Alles fur Deutschland' motto which remains still substantially dark, and on verso, a quote from Ernst Rohm. Maker-marked for Carl Eickhorn and with additional district mark ‘Nrh' on cross guard. Blade shows substantial pitting at the tip and the hilt, largely at the front, lightly affecting engraving. The brown anodized scabbard is complete with solid nickel-silver fittings (a bit oxidized), single suspension ring and leather hanger. Scabbard shows a few dents, as does button on end, and leather hanger exhibits expected wear. Clip bears ‘RZM' mark and ‘95/71'. Generally very good. In 1934, Ernst Rohm distributed approximately 100,000 SA daggers with his personal inscription on the reverse blade. These daggers were to honor individuals who had served with the SA prior to December, 1931. Other than the inscription, these pieces were identical to the standard M1933 SA dagger. After the Rohm purge, the inscription was ordered to be removed under the threat of imprisonment. Many examples were returned to the factory for grinding, while others were simply ground in the field by whatever means were available. Examples will occasionally be encountered with remnants of the original inscription remaining on the blade, but very few with the full inscription still remain.
