Description:

Extraordinary signed photo, 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" b/w, a circa 1931-1934 group image of Adolf Hitler with a graduating class of approx. sixty S.A. men educated at the "Reichsfuhrerschule" ("Reich Leadership School") in Munich. The group is arrayed in front of the school in four rows, with Hitler at center in his S.A. uniform with arms crossed, and with the school's headmaster, Kurt Kuhme, to his left. Most intriguingly, the verso of the photograph is signed by almost all of the graduates depicted, unfortunately excluding Hitler and Kuhme, most in black ink but two in pencil. Each signer also adds his S.A. unit designation and city of origin, indicating that they hail from all over Germany: Aachen, Lubeck, Danzig, Berlin, Lublin, etc. We can identify very few of these individuals or signatures, with the possible exception of PAUL WEGENER (1908-1993), who joined the S.A. in 1931 and later became Gauleiter of Weser-Ems. He is visible kneeling in the first row, third from left, and his signature is at the upper left of the verso, second from top. The verso shows a cello tape mark at top center, affecting four signatures, with a minute fragment of the bottom left corner detached, else very good overall. Interestingly, both sides of this exact photo are used to illustrate the endpapers of the collector's reference "Leaders and Personalities of the Third Reich: Their Biographies Portraits and Autographs", Vols. 1 and 2, by Charles Hamilton, but it is not further described or mentioned in the text itself. Certainly worthy of further research.
