Description:

S. A. M. WOOD
(1823 - 1891) Confederate brigadier general, commanded a brigade at Shiloh and fought most notably at Perryville where his men dislodged artillery by making a charge up a well-defended hill. He later fought at Stones River and Chickamauga. Good content early war-date A.L.S. 'S. A. M. Wood' as Colonel of the 7th Alabama Infantry, [n.p., n.d., ca. late 1861], to 'Mr. Malone'. Defensive content protecting his reputation and his administration of regimental finances, reading in part: '...The object of the Petition presented to me was for the distribution of the Company fund. I deposit all of that fund in my hands, after making the purchases for the Company in Mobile with a banking house there...The fund was never intended for pocket money, and I will not transfer it to be distributed. Only two months of our service has expired and in six months we will still need molasses, vegetables and necessaries more than now. The dissatisfaction in the subject is in some measure an impeachment of me. I say to all discontented spirits, I have done my duty and shall continue to discharge it. They will be better satisfied when they discharge theirs, and me and all may not [be] satisfied that no distribution will ever take place no matter how much complaint is made, or who's offended...'. Some toning along folds on the verso, else very good.
