Description:

RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
(1822-1893) Nineteenth President of the United States and Union brigadier general. Unusual D.S. as President, on a 3pp. 8vo. printed edition of Hayes' remarks upon the election of James Garfield as President. Inscribed at the top to the Editor of Harper's Weekly, "To Hon Geo. McCarty with heartiest congratulation R B Hayes," the address is titled "Remarks of President Hayes at the Celebration of General Garfield's Election, Cleveland, Ohio, November 4, 1880." The imprint opens with a general description of the scene that evening: "Immediately after the demonstration in the Public Square had come to a c lose, the torchlight companies and hundreds of citizens marched to the Kennard House and tendered a serenade to President Hayes...At 11.15 o'clock" Hayes appeared and delivered the following words, quoted here in small part: "...The people of the United States...have many solid reasons for rejoicing over the result of Tuesday's election... We rejoice that the majority for General Garfield is so decided and so large, that there is no room to question his election...You all remember how four years ago the business of the country for weeks and months was interrupted and almost suspended by the doubts in regard to the result of the election...A man of broad, liberal and generous views, he will look over this whole country. Every section of it will be fairly and justly dealt with. He will say to the mistaken men of the South, 'You are to be treated precisely as the citizens of my own State are to be treated...All that we ask of you is that you shall faithfully obey the Constitution as it now is, regarding the new parts as equally sacred with the old'..."" Light folds with partial separation at margins, very light toning at margins, else fine condition. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
