Description:

(1822-1893) Nineteenth President of the United States and Union brigadier general. A.L.S. on Executive Mansion letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 2, 1878, to his cousin Maggie S. Cook making plans for an upcoming visit and listing other expected visitors. In part: '...Our family during the month will be the children of Webb, with Emily Platt & Miss Foote. We also expect as a visitor, Miss Dewey, a niece of the Atty. Genl...and probably a daughter of Wm Henry Smith, a Chicago friend...' Uneven toning with some show-through from mounting stains on the verso. Still very good. Sold with the original transmittal envelope, from which the postage stamp has been excised. William Henry Smith was Hayes's Collector of the Port of Chicago. Hayes refers to his son WEBB HAYES, who served in three wars, received the Medal of Honor, and was the principal proponent for founding the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, the first presidential library.

Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house.
