Description:

RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
(1822-1893) Nineteenth President of the United States and Union brigadier general. Fine content A.L.S. as President 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 22, 1880, on Executive Mansion letterhead to Massachusetts Governor John Davis Long. Marked "Private & Confidential", Hayes cryptically writes, in part: "...On inquiry I find that the forthcoming report of the Secretary of the Interior [Carl Schurz] will contain a full reply to the questions in your note...I will send you...sheets during the present week. My attention was not called to the subject until it was too late to repair the wrong without the action of Congress. There has been some demagoguery in relation to it, which may have attracted your attention...". Hayes concludes: "...In this whole business, I have at all times been anxious to do the right thing. This I am sure you will believe...". Long would later serve as Secretary of the Navy under William McKinley. Minor area of professional paper repair on second page affects two words in text, else very good to fine. Worthy of further research.
