Description:

A scarce anti-Semitic leaflet dropped by German forces on the Red Army along the Eastern front advocating defection to the 'Russian Liberation Army', 2pp. 8vo., on one side featuring a stereotyped caricature Jew counting coins in front of numerous graves. On the verso is lengthy Cyrillic text reading in part: '...Why is this Jew boiling over? It squeals, splashing, drooling with rage, calling on us to kill the enemies of HIS people. Yes! The Germans ruthlessly exterminated the Jews. That's where they go!...Comrades, have you ever seen yourself these 'German atrocities' but in relation to the Russian people, about which Soviet propaganda repeats...no, you have never seen them...because this is complete fiction...Stalin, without hesitation, sends Russian men women and children to the front, but he will never send a single arrogant Jew to his death...Save your life to come back home...Go here! Your place is with us!...Vlasovtsy.' Moderately worn and toned. 'Vlasovtsy' was the term used to refer to Red Army defectors who joined the Nazi collaborative 'Russian Liberation Army.' The name was derived from Red Army general Andrey Vlasov (1901-1946) who was captured by the Germans in the summer of 1942 while trying to break the Siege of Leningrad. He would defect to the German side, be named the head of the Russian Liberation Army, and regularly be used for German propaganda purposes. At the war's conclusion he attempted to escape to the Western front, but was captured by the Red Army, convicted of treason, and executed.
