Description:

RUSSIAN COSMONAUT SURVIVAL KIT
A rare cosmonaut pilot's survival kit contained in a canvas carrying bag, 18 in. x 18 in. x 7 in., with two carrying straps. These survival kits were designed so that Soviet spaceship pilots would have the supplies necessary for survival in the event of a landing in an unintended remote location. Various types of these kits existed with different contents, depending on the anticipated landing location. The bag is stamped in black ink on the front with part number, 'HA3-7 8904739', also with three additional small inspection stamps. The main contents of the kit are contained within in a removable form-fitting orange foam tray, with most of the materials being held in place by thick gray elastic bands. Some of these elements are protected within metal tins with inventory/part numbers stamped to the fronts. The kits include various supplies such as a looped razor-wire saw, a compass, a medical kit, flashlight, matches, signal mirror, fishing equipment, boxes of flares and bullets (not included), as well as other miscellaneous sealed and unidentified items. Other contents in the large canvas bag include: a pair of short folding metal skis and water purification supplies. A booklet inside the kit is dated 1989. Some items that may have originally been held within the case are no longer present, at least four, as evidenced by empty slots in protector tray. Flares and ammunition would have also been included in this kit, as well as a Makarov 9x18 pistol. These survival kits were commonly carried onboard during missions between 1986 and 2006. A fascinating piece of history. Overall very good to fine condition, mostly complete.
