Description:

RUNAWAY SLAVES AND SLAVES FOR SALE NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENTS
Lot of three newspapers with various slave-related advertisements, all being copies of the National Intelligencer from Washington, D.C., 1819-1845, each 4pp. folio. The 1819 paper offers an 18 year-old woman slave for sale and seeks the capture of a slave who ran off with a slave from a neighbor''s farm; the 1827 paper has brokers offering a "stout, hearty" male slave for sale, with a notice by a Charles C. Vo., Md. sheriff describing the capture of a slave couple who fled Virginia by boat and who now seeks restitution from their owner. The 1845 paper has excellent content: it describes the capture in Africa of a New Orleans slaving ship by the U.S.S. Truxton, an ad seeking a runaway with another add seeking to purchase slaves "for the New Orleans market", and an ad seeking the capture of six slaves who fled from one farm in Charles Co., Md. Three pieces.
