Description:

RUFUS BRATTON PRE-WAR ARCHIVE
Superb grouping of photograph albums from the archive of Colonel Rufus Bratton, the Army infantry and intelligence officer whose work as Far East Section Chief of Military Intelligence and actions during the Pearl Harbor attack were fictionalized in the movie Tora Tora Tora. Consisting of four books, the grouping chronicles Bratton's early life and pre-war Army postings, and provides rare, original photographs of the Philippines and Hawaii. The first album contains 89 b/w photographs of Bratton's military childhood, in the Philippines with his family, ca. 1908. Included are depictions of barracks life, a local boxing match, Filipino villagers, fishers, and krismen, Westernized Filipino soldiers, American soldiers holding a 10-man long snake, and a snapshot of the infamous Moro fighter Matanug (the "Sultan of Djimbarra"), held in prison for sneaking into an American barracks and murdering a sleeping soldier. The second album, ca. 1915, holds 118 photographs of an adult Bratton and his young family while posted as a Lieutenant at Fort Shafter, HI. In addition to photographs of his wife and newborn child, the album has pictures of the Hawaiian landscape and native Hawaiians, including fishermen and surfers. The third book, with 75 b/w photographs, ca. 1918-1920, chronicles Bratton's work running a non-commissioned officer academy at Camp Gordon, his posting in Nogales, AZ, and the beginnings of his posting to the Philippines. The final album book, ca. 1929, contains 82 b/w photographs of Bratton, now a major, serving with the 45th Infantry in the Philippines. In addition to images of Bratton in the field and his family, the book contains many pictures of the Philippine landscape and native Filipinos in traditional dress. A fine archive!
