Description:

RUDOLF HOESS FREES A PRISONER FROM AUSCHWITZ
(1901 - 1947) SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer, twice commandant of Auschwitz where he tested and perfected the processes of gassing and cremation. Nearly a million people were murdered with his full knowledge and approval. Hoess was hanged in 1947 following a trial in Warsaw. Very rare typed D.S. 'Hoess' as SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer and Commandant of Auschwitz, 1p. oblong 8vo., Auschwitz, July 4, 1943, official notice that prisoner Siegmund Oppeln, held in the camp since April 21, 1942, is officially released from imprisonment but must regularly report to his local police. Very good. Sold with two related documents: a typed D.S. on Reich Security Main Office letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, June 30, 1943, by a criminal inspector to Auschwitz Concentration Camp advising that '...I have lifted the preventive detention imposed by the police...' and asking that Oppeln be released; with a T.L.S. on S.D. letterhead, 1p. oblong 8vo., Brieg, Feb. 17.1943, to 'Mathilde Oppeln', the prisoner's spouse advising that the release of her husband 'is presently being considered'. Three pieces, very good. Hoess himself is excessively rare - document groups from Auschwitz even more so.
