RUDOLF HESS
(1894 - 1987) Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering, Hess was one of Hitler''s closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrenedered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Initialed retained carbon copy of a T.L.S. "R H", 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Nov. 12, 1937 to the infamous Dr. KARL GEBHARDT (1897-1948), personal physician to Himmler and Hess, auxilliary physician to Hitler at the Berghof, and president of the German Red Cross. Conducted bone and muscle experiments on prisoners at Ravensbruck. Convicted of crimes against humanity and executed. Hess thanks Gebhardt for sending his findings on the examination of Hess'' wife, Ilse, and compliments the doctor''s work with the Belgian royal family. File holes a tleft, and a bit wrinkled at top.
