Description:

RUDOLF HESS' PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
A remarkably important photograph album once belonging to RUDOLF HESS (1894-1987), Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering. Hess was one of Hitler's closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. The album measures 18 x 12.75 in. with the covers and spine covered in pebbled green leather trimmed in gold. The front cover bears Hess' initials 'R. H.' as well as his title 'Bein Stellvertreter des Fuhrers'. The spins of the book indicates the dates of the photos within: 31.8.35 [to] 16.11.35'. Within are within approx. 260 original photographs, 4.5 x 3.25 in. and larger, with about 52 of the images including Adolf Hitler. The images, very possibly taken by Hitler's photographer Heinrich Hoffmann, include scenes from the construction of the NSDAP Administration Building in Munich, Sepp Dietrich, Julius Schreck, Hermann Goring and others with Hitler visiting the cruiser KOLN during battle maneuvers, a return to the construction site in Munich, a huge rally in Munich beside the Ehrentempel, Hess and other aboard a flight, a large stage performance by Hitler Youth, large numbers of the public and SS men greeting Hitler, possibly at Berchtesgaden, and three large images of Hess and Hitler, apparently at the dedication of the party administration building. Some photos are captioned. A few scuffs to the covers with bumped corners, else very fine condition.
