Description:

RUDOLF HESS' FORMAL SILVER TABLEWARE
Fine grouping of ten pieces of sterling silver tableware once owned and used by Nazi Party secretary Rudolf Hess at formal functions. Included is a dinner fork, desert fork, fish fork, teaspo\on, demitasse spoon, tablespoon, fish knife, luncheon knife, dinner knife and ice cream spoon. Each piece bears the identical attractive floral design on its handle, with "800" sterling and other proof marks on reverse, but as Hess' silver was not always marked, only four pieces of this set are engraved with his "R H" initials. Typical tarnishing, else very good. Accompanied by a notarized letter of provenance from Phyllis Orisi, the niece of Sgt. Richard Cowling. She recounts how her uncle recovered 120 pieces of Hess' silverware and mentions that only four pieces in each complete place setting bore Hess' initials. Cowling sent the settings home through the military postal system to Orisi's mother who kept them until Orisi inherited the collection in 2005. Also with a photo of Cowling, image of the complete set, auction listing, and photos of the original shipping crate
