RUDOLF FRIML
(1879-1972) Czech-born composer of operettas, musicals, songs and piano pieces, best known for "Rose-Marie" and "The Vagabond King". Good lot of six signed pieces, includes: three copies of a typed D.S., 1p. 4to. New York, Aug. 26, 1953, a "memoranda of agreement" between Friml, lyricist DAILEY PASKMAN and playwright Victor Clement, in which Friml agrees to allow his music to be used in the play "A Night in Paris". Each of the three copies is signed by Friml at the conclusion in blue ink, with Paskman and Clement countersigning. All show folds, else very good. WITH: Typed D.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, Nov. 30, 1950, setting forth royalties to be awarded to Friml and Paskman for the use of their compositions in the play "My Dear Children". Friml and Paskman sign in black ink at the conclusion, with playwrights Catherine Turney and Jerry Horwin, and agent Edmond Pauker countersigning. Shows folds with some chips to the edges, else very good. WITH: T.L.S., "Rudolf", 1p. 4to., Hollywood, Aug. 5, 1941, to lyricist Dailey Paskman. Friml, inquiring after the date of an unnamed broadcast, and mentioning that his "Rose Marie" will be produced at the Hollywood Bowl. Friml signs at the conclusion in black ink. Folds, else very good. WITH: T.L.S. "Rudolf", 1p. 4to., Hollywood, May 28, 1965, to Dailey Paskman, returning an unnamed agreement with his signature. Shows folds, with paperclip marks at top, else very good. Also present is a manuscript musical quote, 2pp. 4to., in blue ink, unsigned but likely executed by Friml, scoring the song "Loveliest of the Lovely", with prospective lyrics on the verso, along with a second manuscript musical quote in pencil by Dailey Paskman, pairing his lyrics with the score, signed by Paskman at the top of recto and verso. Both are accompanied by a mimeograph copy of a certificate, 1p. 4to., Nov. 5, 1965, stating that the work has been submitted to the Library of Congress for copyright, as well as mimeograph copies of the above manuscript pieces. The collection is rounded out by a pair of 3 1/4" square b/w snapshots, one showing Friml with Paskman and the other Friml with his wife, Kay, as well as a postcard and Christmas card signed by Kay Friml.
