Description:

(1905 - 1980) German army officer and Knights Cross recipient who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler by suicide bombing on 21 March 1943. The plan failed when Hitler left early, but Gersdorff was undetected. He also supplied Stauffenberg with the explosives used in the July 20, 1944 bomb attempt. Fine content T.L.S. explaining his decision to turn against Hitler, 2pp. 4to., Munich, Feb. 23, 1975. In part: ‘...I am happy to answer your question about my motives for participating in the resistance and in planning and carrying out assassination attempts against Hitler: The main motive was the recognition of Hitler and the Nazi Regime planned and committed crimes. The planned persecution of Judaism had been evident since 1933...In July 1941...I found out about the planned ‘final solution to the Jewish question'...there was only one solution for my friends and me from then on: to eliminate the author of these crimes and thus free Germany...In addition, there were recognizable crimes against the Soviet prisoners of war and against the Polish and Russian civilian population, but also the crimes committed in Germany itself against political dissidents...Hitler still had in mind: creating a deserted ‘fire strip between Europe and Asia'...that meant the planned murder of about 30 million Russians!...the continuation of the war would only result in the downfall of the German Empire and the German Nation...' With original envelope. Mailing folds, else fine.
