Description:

(1905 – 1980) German army officer and Knights Cross recipient who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler by suicide bombing on 21 March 1943. The plan failed when Hitler left early, but Gersdorff was undetected. He also supplied Stauffenberg with the explosives used in the July 20, 1944 bomb attempt. Good content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Koln, Sep. 18, 1959 in English to a researcher describing the backgrounds of three letters he had sent to his correspondent. In part: “…The letter of FM v. Bock has been written in 1942…[he was] killed by fighter-bombers together with his wife and his daughter, when in 1945, at the end of the war, he drove by cart from his eastern home to the west, in order to escape the Russians. The letter of General Krebs has been written in 1943…I was not associated with General Krebs since he had been a stubborn Nazi…He died a suicide in 1945 in the bunker…The letter of General v. Kluge has been written at the same time…Every day I had to give him one or two lectures on the enemy situation…[he] asks why the Russians haven’t attacked yet…” Very good. With two reprints of wartime photos, both showing von Gersdorff and one captioned on the verso to indicate he was with Model, Sepp Dietrich, and others. Three pieces.
