Description:

ROYAL NAVY OFFICER'S SWORD
British Royal Navy Officer's Sword, 31 1/2" blade, 37" overall, of the type standardized in 1929. Both sides of the blade are finely engraved with a floral motif, with the Royal Coat of Arms on one flat and a fouled anchor beneath a crown (the insignia of the Royal Navy) on the other. The obverse ricasso again bears the Royal Coat of Arms above the acid-etched maker's name: "Gieves Ltd. London Portsmouth and Devonport". The reverse ricasso is hallmarked with a small brass medallion showing a crown. The spine of the blade bears the acid-etched inscription "London Made". The hilt is of brass, with the Royal Navy insignia at the top of the handguard. The pommel is in the form of a lion's head, with the main forming the backstrap of the grip. The grip itself is covered with ray skin, wrapped with braided brass wire. A flap on the handguard folds down, securing the sword within the scabbard by means of a hole and peg. The scabbard is black leather over wood, with brass drag, hanging loops and throat. The blade shows some oxidation with no pitting or active rust, the brass shows some dark patina, and the leather of the scabbard is cracked and flaking away in many spots, else very good.
