Description:

ROY W. EVANS
American fighter ace in World War II who first served as an American volunteer in the Royal Air Force and later with the United States Army Air Corps. He was shot down in February 1945 and interned at a P.O.W. camp hospital at Scheszlitz and was freed upon liberation of the camp by the Allies. A pair of pieces including a lengthy A.L.S. 6pp. 4to., [San Bernardino, Calif.] Feb. 18, 2000 to a collector discussing his wartime experiences. He writes, in small part: "...No I never met Winston Churchill but I did meet King George and his Wife...when we arrived in England I and 4 or 5 others were fitted with new uniforms and was sent to Bournemouth in Cornwall where we were inspected by the King...The King walked up in front of me and asked what I was wearing the V.R.s for on my lapels (Volunteer Reserve). The Sergeant Major that was in charge...started to stutter and finally got it out 'your majesty...this is one of the colonists that has come to help us.' The King said it didn't matter and get them off because they were reserved for our chaps...all this time the Queen and the rest of the entourage never said a word but all eyes were on me. The King was a very small person if I had held out my arm straight he could have walk[ed] under it without touching my arm...No I didn't give up my citizenship. Several of the Pilots lost their citizenship but just recently most of them go[t] it back...How do you like what this country did in appreciation for the way it treated the Pilots that served in a foreign service to better train themselves for the defense of this country...". More fine content including recollections of a lengthy meeting with fellow ace, Hub Zemke. Offered together with a S.P. 8" x 10" b/w photo of Evans in the cockpit of a fighter plane. Letter bears the expected folds, else both are in fine condition.
