Description:

ROSWELL S. RIPLEY (1823 - 1887) Confederate brigadier general who commanded Forts Moultrie and Sumter, later led a brigade at Antietam and joined Johnston at war's end. Fine content and association A.L.S. as Lieutenant Colonel, 1p. 4to., "Fort Sumter", May 11, 1861, to Brigadier Gen. PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD, then charged with the defense of Charleston and the South Carolina coast. Exactly one month after Beauregard demanded Major Robert Anderson surrender the fort, Ripley inform him: "...I arrived here too late to keep the body of the workmen in. They were on the wharf with their baggage & on consultation with Mr. Lopes [sic, David Lopez, Jr.], I think to retain them in the fort would make a row[?] - I therefore have allowed them to proceed to town & trust that the information which I had from the Governor viz - that the Qm Gen & Judge Frost were trying to raise the money will prove to be correct. I will endeavor to make estimates tomorrow..." Fine condition. DAVID LOPEZ, JR. (1809-1884) was a powerful and very influential Jewish builder in Charleston, totally dedicated to the Confederate cause. Before the attack on Sumter, Major Anderson had destroyed the gun carriages at Fort Moultrie and Sullivan's Island. Lopez was called in to rebuild them, and he was also involved in the construction of siege and coastal defense works around the Charleston harbor area, including Mount Pleasant and Morris Island. This historic letter shows that Lopez was also involved in the reconstruction work at Fort Sumter as well.
